How does working in long-term care differ from working in an acute-care setting?

Fairmount Home nursing staff report that deeper and more fulsome personal connections with residents and colleagues is what really sets the home apart from acute care settings as workplaces. Fairmount staff who have worked in acute care say getting to know and care for residents and their families over the longer term makes a huge positive difference in their overall sense of job satisfaction.

Staff also say they feel like important and valued members of a team at Fairmount.

Oh, and did we mention that they pay for nursing staff at Fairmount is better than in many acute care environments?

What does it mean when we say, "Fairmount is a municipally operated long-term care home"?

Municipally operated long-term care homes are financed, administered, and governed by municipal governments. In Fairmount's case, the home is operated by the County of Frontenac. There are many benefits to municipally operated homes:

    • Fairmount enjoys expert administrative support for many functions ranging from finance to information technology.
    • Fairmount Home leadership staff are highly qualified and collaborative experts in regulatory compliance and maintaining performance standards.
    • The home is overseen by Frontenac County Council, a publicly elected group of representatives who have local and professional expertise and deep personal connections to the people and places Fairmount serves.
    • Fairmount is financed with public funds by Frontenac County through collaboration with partners at the City of Kingston and the Province of Ontario. Our focus is on caring for our most vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbours. Profit is not part of the equation.

    What is the Gentlecare philosophy?

That's our guiding set of values. It's founded on personal respect for all people. It means that we ensure residents are empowered to make personal choices regardless of their health status. Preserving and upholding personal dignity is the key.

It also means that each Fairmount staff member is treated with a high level of personal and professional respect. Working at Fairmount means becoming a valued member of the team. You'll be much, much more than an employee number here.
