The Frontenac Business Awards are celebrating the people and businesses in Frontenac County. Those who demonstrate key qualities of being a business ambassador and the invaluable contributions they make to our community and economy in Frontenac, by demonstrating unique character and supporting quality of life in our community.
The Frontenac Business Awards are meant to be a thank you for the hard work that local businesses have invested into their operations. A recognition of the risks they have faced to establish and grow their businesses, and a celebration of their success, growth and sustainability in Frontenac County. As ambassadors for the business community in Frontenac, nominees and award recipients help foster the spirit of entrepreneurship, collaboration, community building and commerce for all businesses in our region.
Receiving an award not only celebrates the contributions of this business to our community but highlights their success among peers. Over time, by placing an award in your business, it lends a sense of credibility and supports client attraction and marketing efforts within the community as well as further afield. Whether they take home an award or are nominated, it can mean a great deal for a business owner who is working hard to get their business name out there. You can nominate a local business or self-nominate as a business owner or employee.

That’s Shaunis Sakell, owner and operator of Hinchinbrooke Hills Farms in Godfrey. She received multiple nominations and is the winner of the Women-Led Business Award.
Shaunis supplies neighbours and partners with top quality, fresh, local products. She focuses on sustainable and circular farming practices for the mutual benefit of animals, crops, and the environment.
She employs at least two innovative social business models in operating Hinchinbrooke Farms. The first is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) where customers buy shares at the start of the growing season in return for weekly or bi-weekly share boxes containing freshly harvested, washed, and packaged vegetables and herbs. Second is her Rent-a-Summer-Chicken program where customers who want the experience of keeping a few chickens without needing to fully commit are equipped with back-yard hens and the equipment and knowledge needed to care for them for the season.

The Groenewegen family has operated their certified organic dairy farm for more than 23 years. They opened the accompanying creamery 10 years ago. Theirs is a business painstakingly built on values of local food production and sustainability.
From their organic and chemical-free approach to farming to the distinctive reusable glass milk-bottle packaging, the Groenewegens operate one of the most environmentally sustainable food businesses in Frontenac County.

There are Becky Williams and Mark McCrady, owners and operators of Maple Ridge Farms in Sydenham, receiving the Collaboration and Partnership Award from Frontenac County Community Development Officer, Debbi Miller, Oct 20.
Becky is a flower grower who always looks for opportunities to collaborate with other local entrepreneurs. She offers partner products in her online store and offers-up the farm to other business operators as an event and workshop venue. Some business operators with which she has collaborated include Loughborough Lavender, Grains and Goods Bakery, Haymakers Coffee Co., and photographer Suzy Lamont.
Becky sources materials locally whenever possible and encourages and supports other flower farmers. She is frequently called upon for advice and support and has a reputation as a true community builder.

That’s Mike and Nawar Hage, owners and operators of Red Barn Zone/Nordic Resorts in Cloyne, receiving the New Business Award from Frontenac County Community Development Officer, Debbi Miller, Oct 20.
Mike and Nawar opened The Red Barn Zone food truck in the summer of 2021. They offer gourmet selections, elegant packaging, and specialty coffees. They’re proud to serve repeat customers from parts far-flung, some even calling ahead to check that the truck will be open and serving when they arrive.

There are Kim and Dave Perry, owners and operators of Food Less Travelled in Verona, receiving the Ambassador Award from Frontenac County Community Development Officer, Debbi Miller, Oct 20.
Kim and her staff created a program at the start of the pandemic to connect food donors with community members who needed a little extra food for the table. Taking care of her community at such an uncertain time is just one expression of how Kim and Dave demonstrate the values and spirit of Frontenac Ambassadors.

The 2022 Frontenac Campfire business retreat was held October 20. The Frontenac County Campfire Business Retreat and 1st Annual Business Awards presentations were held on Thursday, October 20 at RKY Camp in Central Frontenac.The event, organized and hosted by the Frontenac County Department of Economic Development, began with a casual conference that included campfire chats about tourism experiences, digital wayfinding, and small-business finance. There were opportunities for business operators and entrepreneurs to network and reconnect in person. The afternoon was followed by a networking reception and announcement of the business awards.
“Entrepreneurs in Frontenac have a strong history of working together to attract new customers and investment to the area,” says Richard Allen, Manager of Economic Development for Frontenac County. “The retreat and awards is just one way we hope to further encourage that tradition and celebrate their successes. Congratulations to all the award winners and nominees, and thank you to everyone who attended the retreat.”
The 1st Annual Business Awards nominations opened in September and closed on October 12. Thirty-nine Frontenac businesses were nominated across five categories.
