The Bedford Mills Bridge is located on Perth Road approximately 0.3km north of Massassauga Road. The bridge structure was built in 1962 and first rehabilitated back in 1997. The structure is a single span T-Beam structure with a deck slab system. The overall span of the structure is 19.1m and a width of 9.9m.
OSIM inspections completed in 2023 and 2025 currently recommend that the structure be given priority for rehabilitation in order to extend the useful service life of the bridge. The structure inspection from 2025 rated the structure with a Bridge Condition Index of 61.4 (Fair) and the structure was listed as a 2026 priority in the 5-year plan endorsed by Township Council on May 2, 2023.
Recommended rehabilitation work currently includes:
Rehabilitation of the abutments and pre-stressed girders
New concrete approach slabs, distribution slabs and decking
Replacement of the expansion joints, bearing seats, and barrier systems.
Waterproofing of the new deck
Renewal of asphalts on the deck and the bridge approaches
New guiderail protection systems on Perth Road, and
Erosion treatments for the embankments.
The planned rehabilitation work in 2026 will extend the life of the bridge by another 25 years and aligns with the recommendations within the Asset Management Plan.
This project is categorized as “Exempt” under the 2024 Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process and is considered a pre-approved construction project under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act.
