Battersea Road Reconstruction

July 12, 2023 – Work has now been completed on this project. Thanks to everyone for their cooperation!

In 2022, Council approved the reconstruction of Battersea Road between Burnt Hills Road and Bradden Road. This 4.7 km section is a key artery connecting to Rideau Lakes Township. This section of Battersea Road was selected due to its very poor road surface ratings, along with escalating maintenance and edge repairs due to sub-standard lane widths.

Key information

  • Work will begin in late November 2022 and will take 7-8 months with completion in late July 2023.
  • Ditching and rock removal work will happen over the winter months, with a break in construction before road resurfacing begins in the spring
  • Work will typically be done between the hours of 7 am and 7 pm, Monday to Friday (if weekend work is required, we'll notify area residents)
  • The road will be accessible at all times with one lane open. Expect traffic delays.

The project includes the following activities and improvements:

  • The existing roadway will be pulverized, re-graded and built up with improved granular base to meet design cross-section
  • Roadway cross-culverts will be removed and replaced “like for like” at designated locations. Private entrance culverts will also be replaced.
  • Ditching improvements will be carried out for improved roadside drainage.
  • Rock removal will be carried out to provide improved roadside safety. Local blasting will occur—we’ll advise adjacent landowners in advance.
  • The roadway will be finished with wider lanes topped with a new double surface treatment (tar and chip).
  • The addition of new hard-surfaced shoulders on both sides of the road to support active transportation and to reduce shoulder maintenance costs.
  • The project will also see minor improvements in road alignment to address steep hills and tight curves to meet current safety standards for posted speed limits which range from 50-60 km/hr.

The Battersea Road project is categorized as a Schedule “A” project under the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process and is considered a pre-approved construction project under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act. Construction activities will be led by Len Corcoran Excavating Ltd.

Thanks for your cooperation as we work to improve roads in South Frontenac!
