What is ALTO?
ALTO is the federal Crown corporation advancing Canada’s proposed high-speed rail network in the Toronto–Québec City corridor. The concept includes dedicated rail infrastructure and potential service to major centres including Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montréal, Laval, Trois-Rivières and Québec City.
Is a route through North Frontenac confirmed?
No. A route through North Frontenac has not been confirmed. ALTO’s early consultation materials identified a potential corridor area for public input; this is not a final alignment, approved route, or construction plan.
What is North Frontenac Council’s position?
On August 13, 2026, Council reaffirms its position that the Township does not support the proposed corridor going through the Township of North Frontenac
On February 6, 2026, Council resolved that it does not support the proposed ALTO corridor travelling through North Frontenac, given the limited information and consultation available at that time. Council also supported locating a more suitable corridor and station within the City of Kingston, identified as the regional urban centre and transportation node for southeastern Ontario.
Why is Council concerned about a possible route through North Frontenac?
Council’s position reflects the Township’s commitment to protecting North Frontenac’s unique and pristine natural environment and supporting a strong, resilient rural community. Key local considerations include potential effects on lakes and watercourses, wetlands, wildlife habitat and movement corridors, rural roads, settlements, recreation areas, and future land-use planning.
Will ALTO expropriate property in North Frontenac?
There is no confirmed route through North Frontenac and no Township-specific property acquisition program has been announced. Any questions about individual properties, access to land, survey requests, or potential acquisition should be directed to ALTO.
